أسم آخر للدقس هو (الحوت فاقد الزعنفة), ومن هذا الإسم تتضح السمة الأساسية التي تميزه عن بقية أقربائه سكان البحار. الزعنفة التي يفقدها هذا الحيوان هي زعنفة الظهر.

و ما يميز هذا الحيوان أيضا هو حجمه، فهو الأصغر من بين الثديات البحرية في بحر الكويت. طوله يتراوح ما بين 1.2 متر و 1.9 متر (و في مقياس الحيتان و الدلافين, هذا يعتبر صغيرا). هاتان الميزتان تجعلان هذا الحيوان قليل المشاهدة على الرغم من الفكرة السائدة أنه منتشر على امتداد الساحل. فالحوت فاقد الزعنفة هذا منتشر إلى درجة جعلت الصيادين يعطوه اسم الدقس. و الجدير بالذكر أن مسمى الدقس في بعض المراجع يطلق على الحيوان الذي يساعد الغريق في البحر للوصول إلى الشاطئ.

From their name (Finless Porpoise), you can tell that these animals lack a specific fin, unlike most of their cetacean relatives. The fin they lack is the one on their back, the dorsal fin.

They are also some of the smallest marine mammals that inhabit Kuwait waters. Their sizes range from 1.2 meters to 1.9 meters (that is considered small for a marine mammal). These two facts make them hard to spot for any MMO (Marine Mammal Observer), even though they are believed to live throughout the coast. They are so abundant that the locals in Kuwait have a specific name for them: الدقس (Duqs), which basically means: a variety of fish or sea creatures, and in some references this name is given to the animal that helps the drowning person reach shore.

Habitat: Rivers and shores

Diet: shrimp, squid, and smaller fish
Weight: 7 kg (at birth), 30-45 kg (adult)
Group size: 1-2 members usually, numbers can reach 50 in good feeding sites.
Threats: Hunting, getting caught in nets, land reclamation projects.
